International Variations in Harsh Child Discipline
Wed, 01 Sep 2010 15:03:39 +0100 | PEDIATRICS
CONCLUSIONS:
Physical and verbal punishments of children are common in high-, middle-, and low-income communities around the world. The forms and rates of punishment vary among countries and among communities within countries. A median of 16% of children experienced harsh or potentially abusive physical discipline in the previous year. (Source: PEDIATRICS)
Children’s perceptions of maternal hostility as a mediator of the link between discipline and children’s adjustment in four countries - Lansford JE, Malone PS, Dodge KA, Lei Chang , Chaudhary N, Tapanya S, Oburu P, Deater-Deckard K.

Using data from 195 dyads of mothers and children (age range = 8—12 years; M = 10.63) in four countries (China, India, the Philippines, and Thailand), this study examined children’s perceptions of maternal hostility as a mediator of the links between p... (Source: SafetyLit: All (Unduplicated))

Purification, characterization and in vitro cytotoxicity of the bacteriocin from Pediococcus acidilactici K2a2-3 against human colon adenocarcinoma (HT29) and human cervical carcinoma (HeLa) cells
Tue, 24 Aug 2010 17:09:38 +0100 | World Journal of Microbiology and Biotechnology
Abstract A bacteriocinogenic lactic acid bacterium (designated K2a2-3) isolated from the intestine of Philippine water buffalo was
identified as Pediococcus acidilactici by 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. The bacteriocin was purified by hydrophobic interaction chromatography, cation-exchange
chromatography and reverse phase-high performance liquid chromatography. The purified protein has a molecular mass of 4,625.91 Da,
quantified by electrospray ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Based on a BLAST homology search of a partial sequence
of 39 amino acid residues and the presence of the structural gene papA, detected through polymerase chain reaction, it was identified as very similar to pediocin PA-1. It was active against a
wide spectrum of lactic acid bacter...
Children's perceptions of maternal hostility as a mediator of the link between discipline and children's adjustment in four countries
Tue, 24 Aug 2010 16:33:10 +0100 | International Journal of Behavioral Development
Using data from 195 dyads of mothers and children (age range = 8—12 years; M = 10.63) in four countries (China, India, the Philippines, and Thailand), this study examined children’s perceptions of maternal hostility as a mediator of the links between physical discipline and harsh verbal discipline and children’s adjustment. Both physical discipline and harsh verbal discipline had direct effects on mothers’ reports of children’s anxiety and aggression; three of these four links were mediated by children’s perceptions of maternal hostility. In contrast, there were no significant direct effects of physical discipline and harsh verbal discipline on children’s reports of their own anxiety and aggression. Instead, both physical discipline and harsh verba...
Malaria Update for the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory: a New Species, Plasmodium knowlesi, and New Diagnostic Tests
Tue, 24 Aug 2010 09:19:56 +0100 | Clinical Microbiology Newsletter
Abstract:
Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum are responsible for 95% of malaria infections. P. vivax has the widest distribution and is thought to be responsible for 80% of the infections throughout the tropics, subtropics, and temperate zones. As early as 2004, a fifth malaria species had been implicated in human disease. Plasmodium knowlesi, a malaria parasite of long-tailed macaque monkeys, has been confirmed in a number of human cases from Malaysian Borneo, Thailand, Myanmar, and the Philippines. It is now well established that P. knowlesi is emerging as an important zoonotic human pathogen. Malaria is considered to be immediately life-threatening, and a patient with the diagnosis of P. falciparum or P. knowlesi malaria should be considered a medical emergency because the ...
Biogeology of Wallacea: geotectonic models, areas of endemism, and natural biogeographical units
Tue, 24 Aug 2010 07:53:01 +0100 | Biological Journal of the Linnean Society
The concepts of biogeographical regions and areas of endemism are briefly reviewed prior to a discussion of what constitutes a natural biogeographical unit. It is concluded that a natural biogeographical unit comprises a group of endemic species that share a geological history. These natural biogeographical units are termed Wallacean biogeographical units in honour of the biogeographer A.R. Wallace. Models of the geological development of Indonesia and the Philippines are outlined. Areas of endemism within Wallacea are identified by distributional data, and their relationship to each other and to the adjacent continental regions are evaluated using molecular phylogenies from the literature. The boundaries of these areas of endemism are in broad agreement with earlier works, but it is arg...
Phenomenology of Acculturation: Retrospective Reports from the Philippines, Japan, Quebec, and Norway
Mon, 23 Aug 2010 11:58:57 +0100 | Culture
Acculturation refers to cultural learning and adjustment in the context of continuous cross-cultural experience. A phenomenology based on retrospective descriptions and analyses of self-observations in acculturation contexts may contribute to the development of theory, constructs, models, and innovative interventions. This phenomenology report focuses on 1) super-ordinate decisions, e.g., to eat all local foods; 2) metacognitive stress induced by biculturalism, e.g., anticipation of faux pas; 3) cultural play to cope with cultural incompetence, e.g., writing Haiku in a new language; 4) unconscious acculturative imitation, e.g., shifts in first-language prosody, phonology, or grammar; 5) sense of freedom, e.g., foreigners being excused from norms and expectations; and 6) the role of cultura...
